Not even steady rainfall could keep Calgary’s vibrant older adult community away from the FCJ Retreat and Conference Centre on Monday, June 1. Marking the start of Seniors Week, 157 seniors streamed through the doors of the peaceful oasis to celebrate the launch of the brand-new WELL Care Program (Wellness and Engagement for Lifelong-Learners).
For the vast majority of these visitors, it was their very first time stepping inside the FCJ Centre. The day turned into a wonderful opportunity to introduce newcomers to the venue, which serves as a sanctuary for both physical wellness and personal and spiritual growth.
This vital initiative is funded in part by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, aiming to promote holistic well-being and reduce social isolation among local seniors.
Highlights from the Fair:
Mind and Body Demonstrations: Attendees jumped into popular mini demonstrations of Chair Yoga and Qi Gong, showcasing accessible ways to stay active and centered.
An Indoor Gardening Oasis: Bringing the outdoors in, a special indoor tent highlighted upcoming summer gardening sessions, supported by the Calgary Horticultural Society and their Master Gardener students.
Community Partnership Hub: Seniors connected directly with representatives from CCIS (Calgary Catholic Immigration Society), YYC Home Care, and the Calgary Historical Society.
Hospitality and Tours: The FCJ Centre team treated guests to lovely sweets and refreshments before guiding them on personal tours of the historic venue.

The June 1 launch sets the stage for an exciting schedule of upcoming summer and fall activities, including Zumba, hands-on vegetable gardening, and continued wellness and spiritual practices.
The FCJ Centre extends its heartfelt thanks to the Government of Canada, Fiona, program coordinator, the volunteers, the community partners, and most importantly the seniors who braved the weather to make this inaugural fair a success.
Looking back on the day, what stood out the most wasn't just the busy schedule, but the warmth that filled our conference and dining rooms. Watching these bright, welcoming spaces bring so many seniors together, sharing stories over homemade refreshments and simply enjoying each other's company, was a beautiful reminder of why we do this work. It was clear that the day was about much more than just introducing new programs; it was a space where new connections were made, friendships were sparked, and a true sense of community came to life.
