Over 160 Supporters Gather at FCJ Centre’s Annual Tea Party to Fund Critical Van Replacement

The FCJ Retreat and Conference Centre hosted its annual Tea Party fundraiser, bringing together more than 160 guests, along with 30 dedicated volunteers, FCJ Sisters, staff, and first time and long-time community partners.

The afternoon featured local musical performances by Mira, Nicko, and Linda Dudar, opening prayers led by Sr. Ann Marie Walsh, fcJ, and welcome remarks from Sr. Bonnie Mosser, fcJ.

Executive Director Whitney Nagasan-Calo spoke on the event theme, The Ministry of Welcome and Companionship and the history of the FCJ Sisters in Calgary, who arrived in 1885. The FCJ Centre, located along the Elbow River, operates out of the longest continuously occupied building in Calgary that is still actively serving the public.

During her address, the Director outlined the financial realities of running an affordable retreat center during a time of high operational costs. She highlighted core daily operations, including hosting over 500 spiritual direction sessions annually and running weekly wellness groups for local seniors, alongside a very practical current need: replacing the Centre’s 14-year-old vehicle. Used daily to transport kitchen supplies, haul event equipment, and maintain operations across the grounds, the faithful van has reached the end of its working life.

"Today is as much about friend-raising as it is about fundraising," the Director noted. "Our focus remains on serving people and offering a quiet space for rest and reflection, one person at a time."

Sherrisa Celis, co-chair of the Board, delivered words of gratitude to the organizing committee, Rita Khanchat, donors, and volunteers who made the event possible. Attendees spent the remainder of the afternoon participating in a silent auction and 50/50 raffle, ending with guided tours of the Centre and the grounds.
