More than 100 people from various religious and spiritual communities gathered at Calgary City Hall on February 1 to open United Nations World Interfaith Harmony Week 2026, celebrating this year’s theme, Confluence of Faiths. Elders, youth, families, and faith leaders walked together in procession, symbolizing the many spiritual traditions flowing side by side in the city.
Throughout the afternoon, speakers shared how their faiths encourage compassion, justice, and care for one another, especially during challenging times. Rev Tony Snow from Stoney Nakoda welcomed participants onto shared treaty land, reminding everyone of the responsibility to live together in mutual respect. Representatives from Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Sikh, Buddhist, Baha’i, and Unitarian Universalist communities offered stories, teachings, and prayers centered on unity, kindness, and hope.
One of the most memorable moments came during a shared pause when participants were invited to close their eyes and imagine themselves sitting beside a river, feeling the cool breeze, hearing birds chirping, and listening to the rush of water from the river.
The atmosphere throughout the gathering felt warm and welcoming, reminding attendees that harmony does not mean believing the same thing, but learning to stand together across differences. Many left encouraged by the reminder that Calgary’s diversity is a strength and that dialogue and friendship remain possible even in uncertain times.
Interfaith Harmony Week continues with events across the city, including the Feb. 4 co-hosted event, Harmony in a Time of Crisis, from 7:00–9:00 p.m. at the FCJ Centre, where women from different faith traditions will share stories and open conversation on building harmony and resilience together.
