Gentle Movement, Stronger Connections: August Chair Yoga

Throughout August, 37 to 41 seniors gathered each Monday for chair yoga. Supported as part of the Well Care project under the New Horizons for Seniors Program, these sessions actively address social isolation by fostering meaningful connection, wellness, and belonging among older adults.

Guided by our wonderful instructor Dianne, these gatherings offered a welcoming space to stretch, build balance, and share in community. Dianne’s patient, attentive teaching deeply reflects the Ignatian principle of cura personalis, care for the whole person. She encourages each participant to listen closely to their body, honoring their unique needs and abilities.

Dianne led a grounding routine rooted in mindfulness and everyday mobility:

Upper-Body Ease: Gentle shoulder rolls, reaches, and jaw movements released neck and back tension.

Mind and Coordination: Playful finger-flicking patterns kept minds sharp while warming up hands and wrists.

Core and Leg Stability: Seated leg lifts and ankle circles strengthened support for hips and knees.

Supported Balance: Optional standing work utilized the chair to gently boost circulation and release the lower back.

Restful Reflection: Each session ended with guided relaxation and the soothing tone of a singing bowl, offering a quiet moment to find God in all things, even in simple movement and breath.

Building on this commitment to holistic care, Whitney, the FCJ Centre Director warmly invites everyone to explore our upcoming spiritual growth programs and retreats. Designed for quiet reflection and personal renewal, these sacred spaces encourage a deeper connection with the Divine, inspiring participants to find hope and encounter God in the midst of our complex, changing world.

These gatherings remind us that caring for body, mind, and spirit, and staying connected with one another, is a sacred practice best shared together..
